Alexander Smirnov, a former F.B.I. informant tied by prosecutors to Russian intelligence, fed false Biden claims into Congress. Now President Trump’s Justice Department is backing his effort to reduce his sentence.

Alexander Smirnov, a former F.B.I. informant who prosecutors said had contacts linked to Russian intelligence and who admitted fabricating bribery allegations involving the Ukrainian energy company Burisma, where Hunter Biden had served on the board, made claims that were cited by Republican lawmakers as a key part of a congressional impeachment inquiry.

The Justice Department under President Trump has joined Alexander Smirnov in asking a federal judge to overturn his conviction or reduce his six-year prison sentence, supporting his bid to reduce his sentence in a case involving false claims about President Biden and his son.
